How our calculator works

The method, the sources and the assumptions behind every figure on this site.

The method

For a given salary the calculator works out four things in this order:

1. Income tax from the resident rate table for the chosen year.

2. Medicare levy at 2 percent of taxable income.

3. The low income tax offset, which reduces tax for lower incomes.

4. Take-home pay, which is salary minus tax and Medicare plus the offset. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly figures divide the annual amount by 52, 26 and 12.

Employer super is shown at 12 percent as a separate line. It is not deducted from your salary.

Sources

Rates and thresholds come from the Australian Taxation Office. We check them against ato.gov.au and update the site when they change. Each guide shows when its figures were last checked.

Assumptions

What is not included

Deductions such as work expenses, other offsets, salary sacrifice, fringe benefits, working holiday maker rates, non-residents, the Medicare levy surcharge, and HELP or other study loan repayments. For HELP, see our repayment guide.

Hourly and salary pages

The salary pages and hourly pages apply the same method to common amounts. Hourly pages assume 38 hours a week for 52 weeks, so they will not match your actual pay if you work irregular hours or take unpaid leave.

Why estimates differ from your payslip

Payslips use ATO withholding tables, which approximate annual tax across the year. Your final tax is settled at tax time. Small differences are normal. Your payslip may also include salary sacrifice, HELP withholding or other items.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email contact@antomictech.com with the page and the figure and we will check it against the ATO source.
